Weatherfish (Misgurnus fossilis)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n One of the most unusual \u2014 and at the same time, rarest \u2014 fish species living in our waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once common, today a legally protected rarity that can grow up to about 25 cm. It used to inhabit almost every pond or ditch \u2014 nowadays, it\u2019s a small miracle to spot one at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What makes it special? When the water runs out of oxygen, it simply gulps air and breathes through its intestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n (Yes, you read that right \u2014 evolution clearly has a sense of humor.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n It can also predict the weather \u2014 when the air pressure changes, it starts to move restlessly and swims up to the surface. In England, people used to keep it at home as a \u201cliving barometer\u201d, which is where its English name Weatherfish comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the Czech name pisko\u0159?
