THE SECRET OF BITTERLING REPRODUCTION (Rhodeus amarus)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bitterlings are best known for their absolutely unique method of reproduction. While males show off their vibrant colors during the spawning season, females develop a long ovipositor, which they use to deposit their eggs inside freshwater mussels. The male then releases his milt near the mussel\u2019s inhalant siphon \u2013 the mussel draws in the water, and fertilization takes place inside its body. The larvae safely develop within the mussel for several weeks before emerging as free-swimming juveniles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to this extraordinary strategy, the young are well protected from predators and harsh environmental conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
